Shocking numbers that show the financial toll of ignoring sexual harassment

Ever wonder if sexual harassment is really as pervasive as the #MeToo movement made it seem? Well surveys are in, and it might actually be worse.

Surveys (by Marketplace-Edison and Stop Street Harassment) show that more than 35 million women in the United States have had their careers and finances impacted by sexual harassment.

The surveys show that of the women you know, more than 3 out of 4 have experienced some form of sexual harassment.

Of that group, 1 in 3 has experienced sexual harassment at work; 1 in 6 has quit her job or changed careers because of sexual harassment.

1 in 4 has experienced sexual assault.

Only 1 in 100 is likely to have confronted a harasser.

A woman is more likely to feel in physical danger at work than a man. A woman’s career is more likely than a man’s to stagnate or end because of sexual harassment.

Women lose thousands of dollars, sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars over the lifetime of a career, when this happens.

Do you know more than 10 women? Of that group, 8 of them has likely experienced sexual harassment of some kind; 3 have experienced harassment at work; 2 have likely quit a job or changed careers because of harassment; and 2 have likely experienced sexual assault.

If you, or someone you know has confronted a harasser, you are very unique.

If you fall into one of these numbers, you are not a number. You are not a statistic, but you are in good company. You are not alone. Your situation is your own, but it is likely similar to what many other women are going through right now.

It’s time to start talking about it and taking power back. It’s time to stop taking responsibility for someone else’s harassing behavior and start creating safety for ourselves.

Talk to the women you know and find out if they could use support with that. Don’t let harassment steal thousands of dollars from you or your friends. There are solutions.
